Why Asking for Help is Empowering

Do you ask for help? The act of asking can feel clunky and vulnerable…

…because our society praises individualism. Success seems to rank higher when an endeavour is accomplished alone. It can be hard to reach out for assistance because we don't want to be a burden or appear incapable. We may be afraid it'll take extra time or effort. We worry we will be let down, rejected or judged. Society conditions us to work solo and to compete hard. But asking for help helps. Getting help is worth it. For the receiver and the helper.

Not only might you inspire others to do the same, but you'll allow others to fulfill their love language, because people love to help.

Giving actually has emotional benefits of residual happiness. Research shows it increases happiness levels in the helper. And, it is human nature to be together. Not only for community building, but for creativity too. It's impossible to get certain tasks done without cooperation, input or ideas from others. Creation is amplified when more brains come together.

By asking & collaborating, your nature is nurtured and you build community — how we were meant to be in this world.

Lastly, seeking support is an act of stepping into the unknown. And, just think — what you receive might be better than what you’re asking for. Sometimes what we get is so much more than we think we need. You may discover more than you could have imagined or anticipated. An empowering act, indeed.

Reminders & Benefits:

  • Asking for help might feel awkward. Good. Get uncomfortable. Our brains need a bit of resistance and irritability in order to grow and learn new habits.

  • Overall, sharing burdens with others can reduce the stress associated with facing challenges alone.

  • You might inspire someone else to start asking more. Many see this vulnerability as a sign of strength, cause it is! It is also a sign that you are willing to trust another, thus strengthening relationships.

  • People want to help! And when you say yes to receiving, you tap into the knowledge and experiences of others, providing fresh insights and alternative solutions. You’ll gain opportunities to learn and to increase efficiency at task completion.
